Dave Allen will be the next Keynote speaker and will be giving the group a quick look into the world of WordPress: More Than Just A Blog. Dave is well versed on the WordPress platform and its functionality. “I intend to show that anyone can use WordPress to build a fully functional website with very little experience,” he said.

I was thinking of getting everyone excited about the event by giving out a few terms so everyone is familiar with them so we can hit the ground running:

Themes

A Theme is the visual look of your WordPress blog page or mini website. Many in the online world call them “skins” and you can customize them or use a template. Here’s a very unique theme:

Template

The Template is look of your pages and how you control what is at the top or on the bottom. This would include where you may have the plug-ins (see below) and what is in the sidebar or the bottom footer. Notice the bottom footer on this example:

Sidebar

The sidebar is the area to the left or right that will include a calendar, recent post archive topics or when the next Get Social Brevard event is happening and where.

Plug-ins

Functionality files that you can use (free) that include feeds for your Facebook page to site analytics behind the scenes. This is where you have fun adding and developing the overall feel of your site to your audience. Here is a plug-in for email marketing:

I’m looking forward to Thursday, May 10th to learn more from Dave on additional WordPress features. Don’t forget to register on the Upcoming Events tab on this WordPress Blog/website. See you at Duran!

Selecting the right combination of social media can be a puzzle

With the proliferation of social media sites it can be overwhelming for a business to keep up. There are companies that will manage your social media sites (Like GSB’s own Owl Desk) but as a small business owner it may not be in the cash flow cards to outsource or hire internal social media personnel. So it comes down to you the owner, but there are only so many hours in the already full day. If you do not have time to effectively participate in them all, select the ones that make the most sense for your business.

How do you decide on what sites to get involved with?

First of all you should know the demographics of whom you are marketing to. Age, gender and income are important information you should consider. For instance, if your specialty boutique sells Hello Kitty bling then your target market will be primarily younger. You might hit a few grandfather’s up for a purchase or two but your target market is not males over 45. Selecting the social media sites you use should be based off of their reported demographics ( see the graphs below).

Facebook Facebook with over 845 million users is the social media powerhouse. It leans more towards female users with 68% over the age of 35 and 58% of it’s users report an income of over 50K a year.

Twitter Twitter also slightly leans towards women and has 465 million registered users. 58% are over 35 years old and 47% report an income over 50K.

GSB article on Twitter

Google Plus Google Plus is heavily weighted towards men with only 29% of reported users being female. Income for Google Plus users was not available. 61% of users are over the age of 35. The average user is more oriented towards technology.

Pinterest The other side of the gender pendulum, Pinterest boasts 82% of their over 21 million users are female. Pinterest is one of the fastest growing SM sites recently taking the number three spot. Pinterest has significant potential to rapidly broadcast your graphically oriented (pretty pictures) content.

GSB article on Pinterest

LinkedIn The business related SM site Linked in has 150 million users and over 2 million companies. It’s users are equally divided at 50% between the sexes. 81% of users are over the age of 35 and 71% have an income of over 50K. Marketing to employees and employers is the primary focus and is great for BTB (business to business) marketing. LinkedIn may not be the best place to market your Hello Kitty gear but you can establish yourself as an expert in your field.

Navigating the world of Social Media can be overwhelming, but by selecting which sites are best suited for you targeted demographics, you can break it down into more manageable pieces to get the best ROI (return on your investment).

Safe Travels,

Greg

I don't know what half of these icons are, when will we reach a tipping point?

Wow another social media site, when will we reach the tipping point? It seems like a new SM pops up as often as campaign ads. The latest new comer and potential power house is Pinterest. Fear not, it is not as obligatory for business as Facebook appears to be, but if you have a lifestyle business it could be of interest to you. More about that later, but first a quick break down of what Pinterest is.

We don't have kids but our refrigerator still gets "decorated"

Do you remember the old cork-boards in dorm rooms and other public spaces? Or even the family refrigerator “decorated” with notes, shopping lists, kids artwork, magnets from take out restaurants, family trips, and let us not forget those mandatory primary colored plastic Fisher Price letters. Pinterest is like a digital version of of the old family refrigerator (pre stainless when magnets actually stuck).

Pinterest allows you to “pin” things you find online allowing you to easily return to them as well as sharing them with everyone in your network or people that follow you. To help your page from being cluttered you can break your pins down into boards (remember the cork board analogy?) Pinterest provides you with a few pre determined boards to get started, but you can rearrange and name your boards however you like. You will automatically be following a few people when you start, you can look through their boards for ideas and “re pin” anything from their boards. When perusing the internet if you find things of interest, you can “pin” them by copying the “URL” and returning to your Pinterest site, or you can easily add the “pin it” tool to your internet tool bar when you sign up for Pinterest there is an easy tutorial on how to add it.

That's it i'm slipping into a sugar coma that is too sweet!

Some of the cool ways I have seen individuals utilizing Pinterest is planning weddings and home remodels, keeping a digital scrapbook of things they want, need or things that inspire them. I have also seen it used as a registration for wedding or baby shower gifts. It is also ripe with syrupy sweetness, not great desert recipes but mountains of baby animal pictures. If you like that,  great, most people have some variation of it on their site, but fear not if you like someones else’s board except their cute baby animal one you can pick and chose which boards you follow instead of following all of their boards-which may include boards of puppies hugging kittens.

Pinterst the new kid on the social media block

Pinterest for business – what’s the draw? Pinterest, unlike Facebook, does not differentiate between personal and “fan” or business -  at least not yet  – so it is up to you to set it up how you like, as your personal or business page. As I mentioned before it can be a powerful tool for lifestyle business. What does lifestyle business mean? If your business could be represented by a sleek magazine that is rich with photos it could be considered a life style business and could do well on Pinterest. This is a very graphic oriented site, you can only “pin” photos. Without photos interesting or not, there is nothing to “pin”.  Fortunately as travel consultants we fit into the lifestyle category. Think of all of the travel magazines on the shelf at your local bookstore.

It is important that you do not over promote on your site (unwritten rule for all SM). We try to balance by providing “brand related” pins on our site, things like recipes that remind us of our favorite trips, vintage travel posters, travel related books, travel gear, etc. Any time someone “pins” either from a board or website it is shared with everyone in their network increasing the reach of the business that was pinned. When people click on the photograph or “pin”, it will direct them to the web site it came from, increasing traffic to that business’ site and as Martha says, “that’s a good thing” for business. We have only just started but we have already seen traffic to our website from our Pinterest site. (What can social media do for your business?)

Pinterest is still in beta testing and is open by invitation only, but is is easy to get an invite taking only a few days. Just go to http://pinterest.com/  and ask for an invite or ask us we will help you. Check out our Pinterest site  http://pinterest.com/gwnunnadventure/

Safe travels and happy pinning,

Greg
